SUMMARY
Excerpt from Orationes Tum Creweianae Tum Gratulatoriae in Theatro Sheldoniano Plerumque Habitae The speeches in this volume have been printed at the request of friends. But it is easy to see that they labour under a double disadvantage: first, because they cover the long period of twenty seven years, so that the interest of the earlier ones, at least, may have lost its freshness; and, again, they cannot even pretend to give an unbroken record of matters connected with the University, as the Public Orator only delivers his speech every second year, alternately with the Professor of Poetry. But the speeches when delivered were so kindly received that the Orator is emboldened to h0pe that even the duller presentation of them in print may not be unwelcome. He would also wish to say that, as they were spoken to a mixed audience at the Encaenia, his aim has always been to make them so simple as to be generally understanded of the people rather than to present them as elaborate compositions.
